Role:Vice President, Senior Analyst
Company: Bank of America
Career highlights:
This is a tough question since I am just getting back to professional life after two wonderful years of training at Kenan-Flagler. I have been on the job for 7 ½ months and I am now beginning to establish a sense for my true role. Prior to business school I worked in marketing and new product development for two divisions of Newell Rubbermaid and then as an analyst on the Bank of America and China Construction joint venture.
How has Kenan-Flagler prepared you for your career?
As a former athlete I understand how important practice is to preparing a mind and body for competition. The more you practice, the more you trust your abilities to contribute to your team goals. The same is true in business. Knowledge is one of the precursors to confidence. Having more confidence now in my ability to “intelligently” address and resolve business challenges is very much attributed to the classroom and hands on experience that Kenan-Flagler afforded me. There is not a specific class or activity from my time at McColl that today helps me identify ways to navigate my corporate environment. Rather, it is the whole experience that gives me the confidence to contribute to the success of my team.
What do you do?
I work for Bank of America in Corporate Real Estate. I am in a portfolio management role. I help manage 12 of the bank’s major data centers. My responsibilities include expense forecasting and tracking and managing the capital projects’ budget.
How has the UNC Kenan-Flagler network helped you in your career?
The Kenan-Flagler network smoothed my transition back into the workplace. Much of it can be attributed to the advice from students, members of the faculty and alumni that have advised and mentored me from the time I was deciding where to attend business school. I have trusted mentors –my own board of directors- that provide critical direction to help me manage the next steps in my career.
How would you recommend that current students use their UNC Kenan-Flagler network at prospective companies?
Intelligence is an important ingredient to success. But intelligence alone in an environment full of bright minds like Kenan-Flagler will not give you an edge in your job search. Hard work and nurturing relationships will. So be diligent and methodical in your search. Invest in those relationships which may require a lot of work and patience but in the long term will pay off. Remember you are not just looking for a job, you are establishing a career.
What does the Consortium mean to you?
I am very grateful for the role the Consortium has played in my life. Belonging to the Consortium helped me explore and determine the career path I wanted to follow. I t has bestowed me with a network of accomplished contacts I can call upon for guidance. Most importantly, it epitomizes the success an individual can have when the core mission of an institution is to enable him or her to meet the different opportunities that lie ahead.
