Role: Associate Brand Manager
Company: McNeil Consumer Healthcare (a Johnson & Johnson Company)
How has UNC Kenan-Flagler prepared me for my career?
The rigor of the coursework has expanded my ability to think more strategically and greatly enhanced my creative problem-solving skills. More specifically, my role as a brand manager is extremely cross functional. This means that while my core focus is marketing, a general management knowledge base (supply chain, finance, etc.) is a necessity for success and I believe the coursework at UNC Kenan-Flagler prepared me to think like a general manager (regardless of functional expertise). Additionally, the focus on leadership is paramount. Extracurricular activities, teaching assistant positions and the Leadership Initiative (to name a few!) have allowed me to build relationships and influence early on in my career. Ultimately, I believe this is the area of focus at UNC Kenan-Flagler that has most prepared me to make an impact within my organization and succeed in my career.
What do I do?
I am an Associate Brand Manager on the Children’s Benadryl business at McNeil Consumer Healthcare (a Johnson & Johnson company). My responsibilities include forecasting sales projections, managing the marketing budget, executing consumer/retail promotions and developing a digital platform for the brand.
How has the UNC Kenan-Flagler network helped me achieve in my career?
As a career switcher, the UNC Kenan-Flagler network was instrumental in my transition. I leveraged 1st year classmates, 2nd year students and alumni immensely during the fall of my first year to help understand the field of brand management and how to navigate the consumer marketing space. In addition, the alumni have been key in my leadership and professional development. I have acquired mentors that provide critical direction to help me manage next steps in my career.
What does the Consortium mean to you?
The Consortium is a network within the business school arena like none other. There is tremendous support among peers, alumni and corporate sponsors to change the face and landscape of Corporate America. The united mission of this group across all sectors, levels and fields create a powerful connection amongst its members. It represents leadership, change and evolution. I’m privileged to be associated with this amazing group of leaders.”
