Kofi Akomeah
.
MBA Concentration:
Finance and Entrepreneurship concentrations.
Career goals:
My long-term goal is to run a technology and healthcare investment fund focused on emerging market opportunities. With the voracious demand for healthcare services and technology, I plan to gain experience in corporate strategy and business development within a technology or health care firm post-MBA. After approximately three years, I will join a leading venture capital firm focused exclusively on healthcare and technology investing.
Summer internship experience:
I was an Associate at Carrboro Capital, a lower middle-market private equity firm focused on health care, manufacturing and business services. My responsibilities at Carrboro Capital included screening and sourcing potential investment opportunities, financial modeling and conducting various aspects of the due diligence process. I also executed various sales and marketing efforts on behalf of Carrboro Capital’s portfolio companies.
Why did you choose Kenan-Flagler?
Kenan-Flagler has a strong commitment to leadership development, specifically through practice and feedback. I was also drawn to the strength of entrepreneurship on campus. I was very interested in the following programs: Carolina Venture Fellows, Launch the Venture, Carolina Entrepreneurial Fellows, Venture Capital Investment Competition, and Carolina Challenge.
Your student life involvement at Kenan-Flagler:
While at Kenan-Flagler, I participated in the Carolina Venture Fellows program, a structured twelve-month apprenticeship with a venture capital firm. I am also Chair of the student-run Leadership Advisory Board, which provides feedback to the Leadership Initiative. One of my favorite programs is the MBA Ambassadors, which gives me an opportunity to share my experiences with prospective students.
What is your most memorable experience at Kenan-Flagler?
One of my most memorable experiences was the founding of the UNC Kenan-Flagler Africa Business Alliance. Although the initiative was initially started by Consortium alum, Michel Lusakeuno, I had the pleasure of expanding our presence on campus. I thoroughly enjoyed orchestrating various speaker series, admissions information sessions, and cultural events.
What does Your Kenan-Flagler and Consortium Network mean to you?
Kenan-Flagler and Consortium Network are two pivotal networks that have enabled me to pursue my professional dreams. Needless to say, the Consortium provided great opportunities for me to network with students and employers across the country. Many of my best friends at Kenan-Flagler are also Consortium members. I am fortunate to have such great friends and excellent professional contacts.
What is an interesting personal fact that you would like to share?
I am very passionate about using my business skills to address social issues. As a result, I am part of a North Carolina group, which comprises of motivated leaders and entrepreneurs who are working to end poverty and diseases around the world. Additionally, I am an avid soccer and basketball player.
