MBA concentration
General Management as well as a Sustainability enrichment concentration
Background
Foreign Service Officer, U.S. Department of State, 2001-2009
Staff Assistant, Senator Lieberman Governmental Affairs Committee Staff, 2001
BA in English, Trinity College, Hartford, CT 2000
Career goals
I returned to school in order to leverage my prior nine years of experience in the government and transition into a career in the private sector. After beginning my MBA program, I quickly realized that my skills set fit nicely with private wealth management (PWM) and I will be joining Goldman Sachs as a summer associate in New York this year. I hope to continue a career in PWM following graduation in 2011.
A tidbit about your personal life that you do not mind sharing
My husband Dillon is also a first year student at Kenan-Flagler and we spend any free time we have with our very active, soon-to-be two year old son.
Why you chose Kenan-Flagler
Both my husband and I were impressed by the sense of community at Kenan-Flagler and thought it was an excellent fit for us both as students as well as for our family. People were very welcoming and helpful and we were really impressed with some of Kenan-Flagler’s unique offerings such as the Analytic Skills Workshop (ASW) summer courses and, for me, the sustainability enrichment concentration.
Student life
I am the first-year liaison for the finance club’s private wealth management branch, the liaison for the community service club’s operation learn project, and I am also an MBA ambassador. As the PWM liaison, I helped to plan the Wall Street career trek and worked to ensure that every other first year had all the necessary job application information. Within the community service committee, I organize the Operation Learn collections for orphans in Afghanistan and Iraq as well as collections for troops serving in Afghanistan and Iraq. As an MBA ambassador I have spent time chatting with prospective students and hope to assist in recruiting talented candidates to UNC.
Your experience of the MBA program at Kenan-Flagler
I have learned a great deal already and continue to gain the tools necessary to transition into a new career. Since starting our third module, I have been able to take several electives and have particularly enjoyed Global Context of Business, Intro to Entrepreneurship, Family Business, and a two day seminar on Corporate Social Responsibility. The latter was taught by a Berkley professor and Kenan-Flagler alumna, who brought an enormous amount of energy to the weekend seminar and made it one of the most memorable courses of my academic life.
Your experience applying through the Consortium and attending OP
Attending OP was an excellent experience. As a career switcher, it was very helpful to have a variety of fields represented so that I could take time to speak with professionals from different companies and find out more about positions at their firms. Because of OP, I was invited to participate in two summer MBA camps and I consequently forged excellent relationships with recruiters from different companies. I also particularly enjoyed the different career panels at OP, since it was through this experience that I first became interested in PWM. Lastly, I really enjoyed meeting other consortium students from different schools. I became friends with many of them and saw several of them at the MBA camps and subsequent job interviews.
