Job Search Overview
The Orientation Program is an excellent opportunity to network and meet people from different companies; however you will only get out of it what you put into it. Being prepared is a great way to make an excellent impression on the people you meet. The week will be exhausting but very beneficial if used wisely. Keep a positive attitude and come to OP prepared to network and/or interview.
Once you submit your resume on the CGSM website, companies attending the OP will have access to it. If they are interested, they may contact you before OP to conduct a phone interview or to set up an interview with you during OP. Remember: Do not answer phone calls from unknown numbers after you submit your resume! It is better to check a voicemail and return a call than to be caught unprepared for a phone interview.
1. Job Search/Interviewing Strategies:
· Review the list of companies attending the OP (available on the CGSM website).
· Develop a tiered list of companies based on your interest.
· You should have about 10 companies in your top tier and 10-15 in your second tier.
· If you are interested in pursuing a specific company that is well-known and very competitive (i.e. Kraft, General
Mills, IBM, Johnson & Johnson, American Express, CitiGroup, etc.), recruiters expect you to show them that you have
a passion for their company, industry and products.
· If you are still choosing between different career paths, have resumes tailored to each career path you are interested in
(Your assigned Career Management Center Associate Director can help you with this).
· Practice your resume walk, mock interviews and your elevator speech before the OP (Review the
Interview Preparation Checklist section in this guide).
· OP interviews are normally first-round interviews. Some companies may invite you to visit their headquarters while
others may select you for a follow-on interview to be held at an upcoming career fair or on campus.
2. Networking Strategies:
· Make sure that you attend all sessions and company receptions! This is a great way to show interest in the company,
and recruiters take note of who attend their receptions
· You will be participating in a majority of the OP activities alongside recruiters. Be on your best behavior at all times
because you never know who is watching you!
· Take advantage of meeting recruiters/current employees at companies that you are interested in; these points of
contact are invaluable, especially if the company you are interested in does not recruit on campus at Kenan-Flagler.
· Get to know your peers at other schools. Not only are they intelligent and interesting people, they are also great
resources, and you will see them again and again throughout business school events and in your future careers.
